Applicant countries take part in research

Applicant countries take part in research

Keywords: Universities, Research, European Union

All 11 countries which have recently applied for full EU membership now have access to the EU's fifth-framework programme for research.

The deal means greater opportunities to form partnerships and to benefit from collaborative projects making the most of Europe's scientific and technological potential.

The results of the first call for proposals indicate strong participation from universities in these countries, which in return are opening up their research programmes to scientists from the EU. Participation by researchers in the 11 countries amounts to around 8 per cent of the total. The 11 countries will finance 4.1 per cent of the programme, whose budget totals 15 billion euros for the period 1999-2000.

The countries are Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia.
