Multimedia Environmental Management explores and supports the argument that effective environmental management must be based on a multimedia approach, which focuses simultaneously on air, water, and waste and enables managers to assess the resulting financial, operation, and management benefits.

The multimedia approach, which can be used to design an effective compliance program, includes proper waste and material handling management, systematic monitoring, and record‐keeping requirements. This approach integrates a wide array of environmental requirements and decision processes, which the authors examine in 16 chapters, organized into four parts:

  1. 1.

1 The role of environmental management,

  2. 2.

2 Environmental aspects of business operation,

  3. 3.

    3 Environmental processes, and

  4. 4.

    4 Environmental management trends.

Within these parts, the authors highlight the development of modern environmental management and provide an overview of federal laws pertinent to multimedia environmental management. They examine such issues as chemical storage and transportation, tank system operations and requirements, waste determination, spill response procedures, and employee training.

Moreover, environmental processes addressed in the book include the management of solid and hazardous waste, wastewater treatment systems, stormwater management, air emission control, and site remediation. The authors also briefly discuss significant initiatives in US environmental management and look toward corporate sustainable development.

The authors, whose background comes from the solid waste sector and environmental management, do a good job in this book, illustrating what multi media can do in support of environmental management.
