This book applies the principles described in Bailey’s previous book, Ecosystem Geography to describe and characterize the major terrestrial and aquatic ecological zones of the Earth. Bailey’s system for classifying these ecoregions has been adopted by major organizations such as the US Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy, and this book is a significant contribution to a long tradition of classifying and studying the world’s ecological regions.

Ecoregions was written for several audiences. In addition to environmental planners and decision makers, it is hoped that the increasing visibility of scale‐ and system‐based science in ecological and environmental research will bring this work to the attention of workers in those fields. In addition, students and instructors should find the ecoregion approach useful in courses ranging from environmental planning to biogeography and ecosystem or landscape ecology.

The book includes two color maps that show the major ecoregions of the continents and oceans, plus various other illustrations which make it not only excellent reading material, but also an useful source of reference.
