Business research in Taiwan

Article Type: Guest editorial From: European Business Review, Volume 21, Issue 5

This special issue includes papers that address business research in Taiwan. Asia has been playing an even more important role in international economy in recent years. Among the countries in Asia, Taiwan is strong in business areas such as information technology (IT), electronics, bicycles, and shoes. For these industries, the supply chain and business networking are complex. At the same time they are very attractive to the researchers in other countries. This special issue of the European Business Review (EBR) brings together research on the “business model” of Taiwan, which the editors believe are important to business and research in Europe.

The first paper entitled “The recycling business for sustainability in Taiwan” is co-authored by Yenming J. Chen, Tien-Hua Wu and Yan-Ling Chen of National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. They examine the recycling business in Taiwan as well as its impacts on the collection, environment, economy and social, providing a good example of setting up an efficient national paradigm.

The second paper entitled “The impact of a global logistics integration system on localization service and business competitive advantage” is co-authored by Yao Chin Lin and Ping Heng Tsai of Yuan-Ze University, Taiwan. They discuss integrating IT systems and strengthening the customer service to raise the business competitive advantage.

The third paper entitled “Identifying and prioritizing critical intellectual capital for e-learning companies” is authored by Shiou-Yu Chen of National Taiwan Ocean University, Taiwan. She studies how to identify and prioritize the measures of intellectual capital of e-learning service companies that ultimately influence firms’ competitive advantages.

The fourth paper entitled “Entrepreneurship and innovation process in the health industry in Taiwan” is co-authored by Benjamin Jian Chung Yuan, Chun Yi Liu, Kun Ming Kao, and Ying Che Hsu of National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. They analyze the development of body fitness equipment in Taiwan from the viewpoint of innovation and the factor of success for innovation.

The fifth paper entitled “A new business model for the gift industry in Taiwan” by Benjamin Jian Chung Yuan, Henrik Tai Ping Chiu, Kun Ming Kao, and Ching Wei Lin of National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. They explore how brand-new or small companies thrive in the competitive market.

The final paper entitled “Comparing R&D consortia in Taiwan and the Chinese Mainland” is co-authored by Xu Qiang and Renyong Chi of Zhejiang University of Technology, China. They provide an explanatory framework for analyzing how Taiwan and Chinese Mainland seek to develop R&D consortia based on the comparative analysis and cases study.

We hope that you – the reader of the EBR – will find the six contributions of this special issue of great intellectual interest and stimulation.

Keep an eye out for special issues in the EBR during 2009 and onwards. For example, forthcoming special issues in progress are on: business ethics through time and across context; anatomy of value and value-driven processes in business organizations, and business research in Brazil and Latin America.

Welcome to the world of EBR!
