Absent at the Creation: Britain and the Formation of the European Community 1950-1952

Christopher LordDartmouth Publishing Company1996175 pp.£37.50 hardback

An analysis of the decision by Britain not to take part in the European coal and steel company, marking the first step in the creation of the EU. Each chapter is well documented with copious notes, mainly references to official publications. This is a serious reference book.

Quality Networking in Europe

P. Kunst, Jos Lemmink and Ruth Prins (Editors)Avebury, Aldershot1996216 pp.£35.00 hardback

This bears the distinct hallmark of a European Union funded proj ect: it is dull, lacks any spark of originality and the authors never forget that they are beholden to the SPRINT programme for funding. This study of quality networking in ten EU countries presents findings for each country, but any conclusion is not immediately apparent. A definition of "quality" is lacking.

Torbjorn L. KnutsenManchester University Press1997354 pp.£45.00 hardback; £13.99 paperback

From the perspective of a Norwegian, this wide-ranging history of international relations from the Middle Ages to the present is centred on the themes of war, wealth, peace and power. This revised edition includes reflection on the new ways of thinking brought about by new technology and asks questions about the future. A very useful and interesting book with a comprehensive bibliography and notes.

Britain and European Union: Dialogue of the Deaf

Lord BeloffMacmillan PressBasingstoke1996172 pp.£14.99

Britain's ever controversial involvement with other European countries is discussed, and the crucial question of why Macmillan, Heath and Wilson deceived the British electorate into believing that entry into the European Community could be achieved without loss of independence is raised. A most stimulating account from one who was close to the action.
