Abstract

For some important foods the operation of the CAP has actually accelerated or caused reduced levels of consumption. This has happened in the case of red meats for example. Beef and lamb prices have been supported in various ways under the CAP regime whereas those for poultrymeat have not. Markets have operated in the usual way and the more rapid increase in carcase meat prices relative to poultry has helped stimulate a switch from red to white meat consumption.
