Static charge — the hidden perils

Abstract

How often in industry is a fire or even an explosion caused by static electricity? Sometimes the real source of the problem is never known. And every year, thousands of pounds are lost because of this hidden enemy — not only fire but rejected products due to dust or dirt streaks, and loss of production. Less apparent is the hidden cost, when measured in terms of wasted time. Here, Tony Green, sales and marketing manager of the Static Control Systems Group of 3M, looks at some of the methods of control.
