Abstract

AN OPTIMISTIC view of the economy was taken by Sir Arthur Cockfield, chairman of the Price Commission, when he confirmed a report that the rate of inflationary pressures was declining. Speaking at the month's major conference, “Finance for British Companies”, he pointed out that as companies had to prenotify their price increases, the Commission obtained early warning of price rises in the shops. By relating the figures to total turnover sector by sector they could produce an index showing levels of inflationary pressure.
