Abstract

Brewery chief, Sir Gerald ‘Joe’ Thorley, is un‐ashamedly ambitious. ‘Never be satisfied with what you have achieved, and always aim for something more,’ he tells Ken Gooding. It's a dictum which has taken him from a £250 junior executive's salary back in the thirties to his present position as £34,000 ‐a‐year head of Allied Breweries—one of the top 20 companies in the UK, with Double Diamond among its best known brands. But promotion opportunities are much more difficult in today's giant corporations, says ‘the boss’.
