Abstract

I am assuming Exxon had a plan when it decided to diversify into the “Office of the Future.” I fear, although all of my research has yet to prove it, that the concept of venturing out of the gas tank and into the office was developed by a staff planner and sold to corporate management in an excess of zeal brought on by the oil crisis of the late Sixties. In any case, here's my impression of what went wrong and what lessons can be learned from a $2 billion waste of money by one of the biggest and the best U.S. companies—at some things.
