Abstract

Some stress is needed in order for individuals to achieve anything. However, excessive continual stress without relief is very dangerous. A self‐administered questionnaire in the staff headquarters of a major local government employer in Western Australia (56.3 per cent males) showed that perceived work‐generated stress levels appear to be a major problem and could lead to possible stress‐related illnesses. Managers must make an effort to identify problems such as role ambiguity, role conflict and role overload and attempt to reduce them. They must consider whether they are asking staff to do too much. Stress management techniques should be introduced as a training programme.
