Abstract

Noise is becoming an important issue in the environmental assessment of highways. In The Netherlands, for example, profiled road markings are banned because, despite their contribution to road safety, they generate too much noise. Within Europe, permitted noise levels have been reduced steadily over the last two decades, and it seems that the strict rules now in force may be tightened even further.
