Abstract

SOUTH African Railways are now being supplied with ninety 4–8–4 locomotives and although not all of these are being manufactured in this country, they are all being supplied with British lubricators and lubricating systems. These engines, fitted with condensing tenders to provide economy in water also have mechanical stokers feeding the boilers which work at 210 p.s.i. Locomotive design is such as to provide a very high degree of efficiency and economy and impressive results are expected from their performance.
