Abstract

The increasing complexity of knowledge and skills relating to health and disease, together with the development of a variety of professions and disciplines contributing to health care, has encouraged the development of multidisciplinary teams in the health care field. This natural tendency towards a teamwork approach was reinforced in 1974 by the reorganisation of the management structure of the National Health Service, when formal recognition was given to the need for a multidisciplinary consensus team approach to health service management.
