Abstract

Earlier this year the Government published a White Paper setting out proposals for the future of the NHS. There has been a great deal of debate about the merits of the various reforms but there is agreement on one aspect. The success or otherwise of the Government's plans depends heavily not only achieving support from the various professions but also on good information systems being in place. IT will not by‐pass health care. Airlines, banks, travel agents, hotels, supermarkets, British Rail and libraries have not invested in new technology for fun. They have done so because it has been efficient — good for business and good for the customers. Health care business is no different.
