Abstract

This review covers developments in digital published information services mostly in the Business Information field. There are however, general trends in the development and marketing of these systems which are of considerable interest and concern to all users or potential users. I will expand the survey of CD‐ROM technology to all Discs and Laser Disc systems especially those usable with hard disc PCs. This perspective is from the viewpoint of an experienced user of online data both as an intermediary and end‐user. We have no CD‐ROM data as yet in the Information Centre at Credit Suisse First Boston Ltd. (CSFB) but several of my managerial staff have used and evaluated CD systems at one of our partners — the First Boston Corporation's Information Centre in New York. We have been using floppy disc based PC stand‐alone systems for some time both in the Information Centre and other areas of the Bank and both published databases and internally developed databases. CSFB is a long established investment bank with an insatiable demand for information of all kinds. We subscribe to some 13 host systems for on‐line database access.
