Abstract

In April of 1986 a small database was mounted on Cambridge County Council's computer to serve the needs of the local authorities. Its beginnings can be traced to the 70's when representatives of SOLACE (The Society of Local Authority Chief Executives) and representatives of local authority associations as well as individual local authorities, had expressed to the Department of the Environment a need for a register or database of research set up for their purposes. Eventually a sub group of the NLGSLC (National and Local Government Statistical Liaison Committee) consisting of DOE and local authority representatives was formed to examine methods of meeting this request.
