External databases: an overview

Abstract

A typology for external online databases is presented and the current number of bibliographic and source databases is assessed. The nature and importance of source databases, particularly full‐text and numeric services, is discussed. Information professionals must embrace these new products if they are to maintain and extend their role in information transfer.
