Abstract

Should one use natural language or a controlled vocabulary to handle the names of organisms appearing in the scientific literature? At first sight the use of natural language seems attractive. One can take names straight from the text of articles and use them as descriptors in an information retrieval system. The taxonomic information is then as specific as the text itself.
