Abstract

In giving any introduction to information retrieval it is necessary to begin by explaining what it is and why, then to examine some of its central features, and then to try to forecast where it is going. To do the latter involves looking at some of the conflicting forces acting on it in the present, as well as at the technical developments which are always promising to revolutionize our work.
