Abstract

It is reasonable to date the birth of the UK MEDLARS Service as May 1976, when the first searches for customers were processed. MEDLARS came about because of the need to automate the production of Index Medicus. The forces which gave it birth included the pressure of growth of the Medical literature and the emerging applications to typesetting of computer technology. To comment on how the US National Library of Medicine had the initiative and found the resources to undertake this innovation is beyond the scope of this paper. Certainly, the fact that they launched MEDLARS and then shared it with the international medical library community, has been of profound importance to librarianship.
