Abstract

BP Research Centre, Sunbury, is the principal research establishment of the BP Group and about half of BP's world‐wide research is performed there. It was established in 1917 as a ‘two men and a boy’ operation in the basement of a house called ‘Meadhurst’ at Sunbury‐on‐Thames, some 14 miles west of London. From these humble beginnings it has expanded into an operation employing about 1,500 people, about one‐third of whom are graduates in science or engineering.
