Abstract

It is part of the responsibility of an information department to decide which of the available external abstracting and indexing services it, and the scientists it serves, should use. I propose in this paper to attempt to analyse the choices which must be made and to draw attention to the questions which each user must ask. In most cases I am not able to supply satisfactory answers, but I hope that other people may do so.
