TY - JOUR AB - In a recent issue of this journal Thomas and East outlined the difficulties in communication which faced the Aslib Research Department arising from increased attention to the use of management techniques in library/information systems. Their project, involving a study of the use of bibliographic records in libraries, led to a need to define certain terms relating to systems and their analysis, and this paper attempts to continue the same line of thought. It should be reiterated here that the two papers do not attempt to provide the standard terminology but a standard terminology for a group of co‐workers. The need to extend the framework of definitions has arisen from another project of the Aslib Research Department titled ‘Economics of Library Processes’. The aim of this project is to systematically study a wide range of processes, and to evaluate the economics of alternative techniques. This will involve the use of a number of management techniques whose applicability will be concurrently assessed.
