MEMBERS' FORUM THE PUNCHED‐CARD INDEXING EXPERIMENT AT THE LIBRARY OF THE ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT, HARWELL
Abstract
The library at the newly‐formed Atomic Energy Research Establishment was set up in 1946,1 and from the start it became obvious that a subject index, capable of unlimited expansion, must be compiled for the rapidly accumulating report literature. It was thought that here was an excellent opportunity to try out the rather novel scheme of indexing by means of punched cards. The present paper briefly describes this experiment in indexing and gives the reasons for the discontinuance of the scheme in favour of an orthodox card index.
