SETTING UP A TRANSLATIONS INDEX
Abstract
Translations of foreign technical papers are an important source of knowledge and it is natural that the idea of providing a key to this knowledge should be associated with Aslib. Such a key, in the form of an index to translations, had often been discussed since 1925, but it was not until after the Aslib Conference of 1942 that action was taken. A year later, an Aslib Memoranda and afterwards a questionnaire were sent to members asking for their views on the proposal to establish an index and inviting their co‐operation in building it up. The result was encouraging and cards containing bibliographical details of translations began to arrive at the Aslib office. The index was small and grew slowly, but it was the nucleus for the later and more ambitious scheme.
