Abstract

TODAY approximately 4,000 million people inhabit this planet. Fifty years ago the number was only half as large. The rate of the population growth has become so rapid, however, that the UN estimates that by the year 2,000, which is only 26 years ahead, there will be 6,500 million of us. If that forecast materialises our planet will have to yield nearly double the present supply of food, water, raw materials, energy resources and the other essentials required to sustain human life.
