Abstract

In under twenty years the computer has developed from a laboratory toy to the sophisticated machines which are daily having a greater and greater effect on our lives. Almost every week, new equipment, improvements in existing equipment, and new ways of using the machines to make them more convenient, are being announced. A computer generation is now about five years — and that is just about the time it will take to install an automated system in a library and get it working.
