Abstract

Our primary aims are to reach a state of ‘optimal mechanisation’ of routine processes as soon as possible, achieving integration between individual systems wherever possible. By ‘optimal mechanisation’ we mean that new systems will be designed only if benefits may be expected, and the costs are reasonable. Our secondary, or long‐term aims, are to experiment with information retrieval by computer, and to move towards on‐line capability for all systems when usage can justify the cost. We are currently planning several systems, and are fortunate in having the full cooperation of the Computer Centre. The following notes indicate our activities to date.
