TY - JOUR AB - The development of online services targeted at the consumer mass market in the USA and in Europe is described. The factors that are affecting the rate of growth of these services in Europe are identified and from this analysis it is concluded that it is very unlikely that the demand for these services is going to grow as rapidly in Europe as has been the case in the USA. The impact of the closure of the Europe Online service is discussed.
