Contraves AG, Zürich

Abstract

With Contraves AG celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of its foundation, 1986 seemed an appropriate year in which to visit its Zürich headquarters and multilayer production facility situated in Schaffhauserstrasse in a quiet suburb approximately five minutes' drive from Zürich International Airport. The advantages of this strategic location, convenient for intercontinental communication and an ideal focal point for business within mainland Europe, can hardly have been fully appreciated when in 1936 the small company was set up in a rural environment for technological and scientific research related to air defence. From its modest beginnings with four employees, that R&D company of Contraves (Latin: contra aves= against birds) has attained a widely respected reputation and currently employs some 5300 personnel worldwide, 2300 of whom are based in Zürich.
