AB  - LIBRARIANS are trained to be helpful, but not to be mugs, so why do they submit so meekly to unreasonable demands? A school teacher in Wigan, Warwick or Wareham gives his pupils an exciting project and what do they do? Try to find out the hard way? Not on your life—they ‘use their initiative’, which means they sit down at home and write shoals of letters to libraries, large industrial firms, marketing boards, polytechnics and universities— letters which end up on some unfortunate librarian's desk. What the letters ask, or more likely demand, is to have the writers' work done for them.
