There is no mandatory limit to the number of retreads, but ten is a typical maximum, with the average much less. Currently, the quality control of retreaded tyres is ensured by inspection both of carcase and final product, and this includes some holographic and destructive sampling of the production. Notably, a Cranfield Institute of Technology project has pointed to greater failure after three or four retreads. The tyre manufacturer would like operators to keep more complete records of individual tyres used to help in the collection of information.
