SINCE the end of the Second World War there has been a gradual evolution in the accuracy and reliability of aircraft instrumentation. This has been achieved primarily by the application of new technologies to the equipment itself and also by the introduction of new sensors. The evolution in the nature and form of the cockpit displays themselves has been less pronounced and certainly not as notable as in other areas such as automatic landing.
