Abstract

BCF (or more correctly bromochlorodifiuoro‐mcthane) is a new fire‐fighting agent which has been developed by the General Chemicals Division of Imperial Chemical Industries Ltd. for use against Class B and Class C fires, i.e. those involving inflammable liquids, and electrical fires, for which water is not a suitable fire‐fighting agent. Its particular merits arc very high efficiency, very low toxicity and absence of corrosive effect. Additionally, BCF, which is a gas at normal temperatures but condenses to liquid at minus 4 deg. C., has ideal physical properties for a fire‐fighting agent for it can be stored at moderate pressures as a liquid in extinguishers from which it is discharged as a liquid. When it reaches a fire it volatilizes instantly‐giving rapid extinction of the flames; after use BCF leaves no residue and does not affect common materials, such as wood, metal, plastics or fabric.
