AB  - THE Ryan Fireball was the first compositely engined aeroplane to be designed for the U.S. Navy and to go into regular service. Although in some respects it was an interim type, pending the development of jet‐engined fighters for naval use, it does represent a policy that is being pursued in America and neglected in this country; that is the adoption of the composite‐engine arrangement in order to use the economy of the piston engine for range and the power of the jet for speed and climb under combat conditions. The advantages of this arrangement were analysed in an article by two Ryan engineers that we published two years ago.
