TY - JOUR AB - THE use of fabric as a wing covering introduced the problem of tautening the fabric. The history of aeroplane dope may be said to date from 1911. Prior to that date attempts to obtain a taut covering were made with such material as sago, which was at best a fair‐weather expedient. Experiments were also carried out with casein dopes, but these were discounted when it was found that cellulose acetate dissolved in suitable solvents gave satisfactory results.
