Abstract
A milestone in MS/PC‐DOS microcomputing was passed without fanfare in August and September of 1987 when AT class 80286 systems outsold 8088‐ and 8086‐based PCs and XTs for the first time. The absence of any noisy celebration may be attributed to an industry‐wide presumption of growth and evolution based on a much more powerful central processor, the Intel 80386 chip.
