TY - JOUR AB - The potential significance of the World Wide Web for science and scholarship is analysed from informational, communication, and behavioural perspectives. Key factors to be taken into account are (i) scale, (ii) cost, (iii) conviviality, (iv) community, and (v) legitimacy.
