Abstract

Government Department libraries have wide and usually diverse interests. They need recruits with a good general education, preferably graduates, who have also completed a course in general librarianship, with some methodological studies in special techniques and subject fields. Since recruits rarely know in which fields they will eventually specialize, more intensive education should follow some years of practice. A College of Advanced Librarianship and Information Work should be created to provide three, six, and twelve‐month specialized courses for librarians between, say, twenty‐eight and thirty‐five years of age to enable them to specialize. Short refresher courses should also become available for all ages.
