Abstract

The Abstracting Board was created in 1952 primarily to co‐ordinate and promote the exchange and speedy publication of abstracts in the fields of science covered by the International Council of Scientific Unions. To date it has brought physics, chemistry, biology, and astronomy (since 1965) under some control. Thus it has reduced delays in the appearance of abstracts by up to three months by arranging for proof sheets to be exchanged by airmail between the major services. It has also campaigned unceasingly for improvements in the presentation of periodicals and the provision of author abstracts.
