Abstract

Dear Sir, Who Pilots the Hovercraft? A misunderstood metaphor is to be blamed on its maker. However, whilst taking the blame, may I try to correct the misunderstanding? My ‘hovercraft’ metaphor at the FID Classification Research Conference, Elsinore, 1964, is not directed, as your reviewer states, against documentalists who are not mathematicians. It is directed against mathematicians, and kindred specialists, who pretend to be documentalists.
