Abstract

One of the current projects of the Aslib Research Department is a questionnaire survey of the use made of special library/information units in the fields of science and technology. It is hoped that this investigation will reveal typical behaviour patterns in definable groups of users; in other words, may make it possible to ‘classify’ users of special libraries, and to predict their needs with reasonable accuracy. Such information should prove useful to organizations about to set up new information services or to reorganize existing services. The aim of this article is not to give the results of the Aslib survey in digest form, but to describe some qualitative aspects of the survey. These aspects include personal impressions of the Aslib investigator who visited the libraries concerned, trends that were observed, and questionnaire data that were verified or qualified by direct observation.
