Abstract

When the Council of the British National Bibliography was established in 1949 the question of a printed card service was very much in the air. There was at the time a considerable body of opinion in support of such a service and it was felt by some that this was of equal if not greater importance than a printed bibliography. The Council, however, thought the cost of a printed card service would prove too great and decided to postpone its introduction until a later date, giving its full attention to a printed bibliography. It promised, in its first prospectus, to give consideration to a card service if the bibliography proved successful.
