Abstract

Summary: Team‐work needed by modern research; need for division of labour and externalized memory; emergence of the library profession in relation to recalling memory and of the profession of the data‐specialist in relation to correlating memory; differences in the function and training of the two professions; factors which militate against their being distinguished; the need for both professions to have a common classification technique with special reference to punched cards and similar machinery for search.
