One of the consultants most popular in today's corporate board rooms, Michael Porter, has an important message for libraries, both public and private. Porter examines organizational strategies to answer the question, “Why does one player in an industry come out a winner and another a loser?” His books Competitive Strategy (Free Press, 1980) and Competitive Advantage (Free Press, 1985) examine ways to develop strategies that strengthen organizations in the marketplace. In 1989 he presented his concepts in a video production that became one of the best sellers of the year.
