Abstract

There has been a continuing movement in the information industry towards the provision of menu and icon driven search and retrieval systems for both public and private databases. This trend has been motivated by a number of factors but we are now beginning to see such systems reach a level of sophistication and functionality unforeseen only a few years ago. Moreover, although command languages still have a critical role, the latest interface developments from FT Profile, New Information Paradigms and others place the capability of quite advanced searching into the hands of the end‐user.
