WHO KNOWS WHAT THE YEAR 2000 WILL BRING?

Abstract

I've been asked in 1993 to focus on an area I consider my expertise and predict its development by the year 2000. Because of my advanced age, seven years seems a very short time and in my area of expertise meaningful progress has always taken twice as long as anyone has predicted. I shall predict that in the area of human/machine interface problems in the retrieval of information, the road to ‘knoware’ is no‐where — there will be little meaningful progress by the year 2000. If I live to that year, I hope to eat crow!
