Conventional steel sheet piling installed in sea‐water has often given the desired length of service without any form of protection. However, there are certain environmental circumstances involving water salinity, pollution, degree of exposure and water temperature which require that full or partial protective measures be taken either at the time of original construction or at a later date. Steel piling in sea‐water installations is exposed to five different conditions along its length (Fig. 1).
