Abstract

OXYGEN, sulphur, selenium, tellurium and polonium form the sulphur group 6a of the periodic table. Group behaviour is characterised in that any additional electrons appear in the outermost orbit (to complete the octet) with the result that chemical and physical properties and valence change rapidly in passing to succeeding atomic numbers.
